Why Do I Need A Permit For My Spa?

There has been a lot of people asking me lately about permits for a portable spa, and why they need them. First let me say that every state and every town has different rules regarding portable spas. The current codes are basically saying any body of water with a depth of more than a foot I think, will fall under swimming pool codes. There are several codes about where the spa can be placed in your yard. The main thing they want to know is who is doing the electrical wiring. You really need to use a licensed electrician to do this work. If it is done wrong it may not be safe.

Here in NJ there is a bonding code issue called "Equipotential Bonding" What is this? Article 680.26 details the bonding requirements for eliminating voltage gradients in the pool or spa area. Basically it means that within 3 feet around your spa there needs to be a bonding grid placed to absorb any voltage that can be harmfull to you. This means any concrete or concrete by-product ie. Pavers, stone dust or block needs to be protected.

The laws are changing and it would be wise to stay informed if you plan to buy or move a spa in the future. Any licensed electrician should be familiar with this code. So that is why they want you to have a permit to install a portable spa or pool.

Hope this helps....Until next time.....
