Is Your Spa Turning Brown Or Green????

The other day I had someone ask me why the jets in their spa were turning brown. I asked her if she had a well. She said yes so I proceeded to inform her about mother earth and her mineral content.

You see when we add a sanitizer to a body of water that has a high level of minerals such as Copper, Iron and Magnesium. The chlorine/bromine will oxidize the minerals and they will start to come out of solution and settle on the surface and or jets within the water supply. So she was experiencing Iron, that when oxidized turns reddish brown, Copper will turn green and Magnesium will turn a grayish color.

Some town water supplies also have a mineral content that will require you to use a metal remover in your water prior to adding sanitizers. If you notice this discoloration, check your clor/bromine level . As long as it is not too high you can add a mineral out to the water and wait 24 hours and the discoloration should be gone.

When in doubt, take a water sample to your local pool supply store and ask them to check for metals in the water.

Until next time....
