Do you think your spa is leaking? If you have to add more than 1 inch or so per week you probably are losing water. There are many different places that you could be losing water. The first place to check is near your
pumps
. The pumps in a spa have a
ceramic seal
that prevents water from leaking out and into the electric part of the motor. Low
PH
levels are acidic and tend to wear at the rubber and ceramic parts of the seal, which will cause a substantial leak if not addressed.
Next you should examine the plumbing at the connections to the heater and pumps. There are
o-rings
at all these points and they can wear out over time. They should be replaced every couple of years. Now look at the
PVC plumbing
itself for any splits or
bad glue joints
.
Lastly, and this one can be the most difficult to find and deal with is the leaking plumbing that is encased in the insulating foam surrounding the spa. If you can't find anything else its probably in the foam insulation. There is no easy way to find this type of leak. It's going to take time and patience.
You can get yourself a
wooden dowel
about a foot long and carefully start poking into the insulation as you pull out the dowel check to see if it is wet at the end, this would be your indication that you are in the right area. Remember that because the insulation is all around the plumbing a leak can travel. Where you start digging and where you actually find the leak may be a large distance. As you find the area the foam will be very wet. The water should feel warmer as you get closer to the leaking fitting. Once you find the leak clean the area around the leak as good as you can. Try not to use very sharp objects to clean the area as you could also do more damage if your hand slips and cuts another pipe.
Good luck hunting....Until next time.....
