New house has a spa? No worries! I'll walk you though the basic spa start up procedures.
First thing you should decide is what kind of sanitizer
are you going to use(refer to my blog "Sanitize Your Spa"). Now you need to start filling up your spa with a garden hose. If you can, try to always fill the spa through the filter
area as this will fill the plumbing lines first and allow the air pockets that may build up to be forced out so that when you turn on the spa the pumps
will push water with no problems. (Remember to always have the power off to your spa when there is no water in it.)
As the spa is filling and you get a foot of water or so in it you will need to put in 8 oz of spa metal
remover per 500 gallon spa, this will sequester any trace metals that are in your water supply ie. copper, iron, magnesium etc. These metals can form staining both in the water and on the surface of the acrylic. Copper turns green, Iron turns reddish brown, magnesium turns grayish.
Next when the spa is full(see your owners manual for proper water level) turn on the power to the spa and check that all functions are operating properly. Now you will need to test the water with your testing device(test strips
, or a liquid test kit
). The following is a list of recommended chemical levels.
- Chlor/Bromine- 2.0-3.0 ppm
- PH- 7.2-7.6 ppm
- Alkalinity 90-140 ppm
Note: If you choose a mineral system
you can keep a 0.5 - 1.0 Chl/Bro level
The first chemical you should adjust is your Alkalinity this is a buffer for the PH and sometimes just by adjusting the Alkalinity the PH will fall in line. If you have to make adjustments do it sparingly, a table spoon or two at a time with the jets running for 15-30 minutes and then recheck. Do this with each chemical. If you put too much in or too fast you will cause foaming.
After the PH
and Alkalinity
are good you should wait until the temperature of the water reaches above 70 degrees. The sanitizers rely on the other chemicals to be correct and the water on the warmer side to work effectively. After the temperature is good put in 2 oz of the sanitizer of your choice. Allow the spa to run for a couple of hours before you use it to allow the Chlorine/Bromine to drop a little.
Now the spa should be ready to use and enjoy.
Until next time....
